UPSS Environment Protection Plan

Friday 12th June 2009

Under regulations for underground petroleum storage systems (UPSS) that came into effect in June 2008, all owners and operators of UPSS systems (including old or current underground petrol tanks and oil storage systems), were required to have an Environment Protection Plan in place before June 1, 2009.

The Environment Protection Plan (EPP) must comply with UPSS regulations and outline:

1) Detailed information about the system

2) Person responsible for the management of UPSS

3) Environmentally responsible policies and procedures aimed at monitoring fuel/oil/petrol leaks or losses.

4) UPSS specific policies and procedures for managing or reporting incidents.

5) A maintenance schedule and/or maintenance logging/record keeping system.

6) Drawings of the system and plans for the storage site.

7) List of industry standards and specifications that have been used or followed by the Environment Protection Plan or EPP.

Douglas Partners advises that it is not too late to adopt or implement an Environment Protection Plan and, potentially not too late to avoid associated fines.

Douglas Partners employs a team of environmental consultants that are well equipped to develop environment protection plans. We have developed generic Environment Protection Plans and can customise them according to individual UPSS sites. These templates ensure that we have a reasonably quick turnaround and that costs remain competitive without compromising industry best standards or practices.
