New Royal Children’s Hospital Project

The 165,000 square metres new Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) is a world class facility with co-location of clinical, research and education facilities, being the most significant development in the State’s health infrastructure over the past 50 years. The new building is directly adjacent to the existing RCH that moved to the Parkville site in 1963.

The hospital complex comprises a multilevel basement up to 18 metres deep and 5-6 above ground levels. Development required the construction of 600 lineal metres of anchored bored pile soldier walls around the perimeter of site and abutting the existing operating hospital with sensitive laboratory equipment that necessitated construction complied with strict vibration criteria.
Largely based on experience with deep excavations in Melbourne’s CBD, Douglas Partners was selected by the builder, Bovis Lend Lease (BLL), to undertake a critical review of the geotechnical conditions and preliminary design for the foundations and ground retention system.
DP was also involved in evaluating the foreseeable geo-risks as input to the GMP tender. Subsequently, DP was engaged to carry out the detailed geotechnical design, construction phase inspections, and monitoring deflections of the soldier pile walls.
