Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Program Project

Territory Alliance and New Future Alliance were selected by the Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Program (SIHIP) to provide infrastructure upgrades, new houses and refurbishments in over 73 remote Northern Territory communities.

With a total project value of $672 million over five years (2008-2013), SIHIP is the largest housing program ever undertaken by the Australian and Northern Territory Governments. The program was established to improve housing and infrastructure in remote communities and provide employment and training opportunities for indigenous people in these communities.
With more than 15 years’ experience working in remote areas of the NT, Douglas Partners (DP) has been able to provide specialist geotechnical advice for both alliances since commencement of the program in 2008. DP has been engaged to undertake investigations for several facets of the program at places such as Nguiu, Maningrida, Galiwinku, Angurugu, Umbakumba, Lajamanu, Ngukurr and Gunbalanya, which are anywhere between 100 km and 900 km from Darwin and in several cases on islands off the mainland.
From site classifications for new housing, to earthworks quality control testing and more extensive investigations for new subdivisions, roads, sewer and water mains, elevated water tanks, and sewer treatment facilities, DP has advised the civil and structural designers, and building contractors on many of the geotechnical related issues.
