Karratha Power Station Project

The Karratha Power Station is located 1,600 kilometres north of Perth in Western Australia. With rapid growth and unprecedented demand for power from major resource companies and the growing communities of Karratha and Port Hedland, this 86 megawatt (MW) gas-fired power station is very important for maintaining a reliable power system in the region. The facility supplies electricity to residential and business consumers under a long-term contract with state-owned energy company Horizon Power.

Douglas Partners’ engineers carried out geotechnical investigations to provide information on subsurface conditions at the site during the planning, design and construction of foundations, pavements, drainage and large evaporation ponds.

Scope of work during design stage included:
  • Assessment of geotechnical conditions across the sites of the new power station and a proposed adjacent 132 KV switchyard extension;
  • Foundation design for shallow and deep systems;
  • Preliminary contamination assessment;
  • Provision of soil properties under dynamic loading; and
  • Pavement design for road trains.
Scope of work during construction:
  • Assistance during earthworks;
  • Geotechnical assessment of evaporation pond bunds.
Douglas Partners is committed to innovative energy projects that respect the environment and benefit communities.
