Wongawilli & Nebo Shafts, Mount Kembla

Douglas Partners conducted field sampling and laboratory testing at the Wongawilli Air Shaft and Nebo Air Shafts (nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4) rehabilitation site, Mount Kembla. Forbes Rugby Pty Ltd commissioned the testing on behalf of BHPB Illawarra Coal. The assessment was required for environmental due-diligence purposes which forms part of planned rehabilitation for the sites. The site comprised three separate areas located within an area of the Illawarra Escarpment.

The scope of works for DP included field mapping and site inspection; environmental soil sampling from both gridbased and targeted sampling locations across the site; preparation of sample description logs and laboratory analysis of soil samples.
The field work comprised a site inspection by DP environmental engineers and the drilling of test bores for the purpose of soil logging and soil sample collection. Sample analysis was conducted by Envirolab Services, a laboratory certified by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA).
DP identified a number of areas where heavy metal concentrations exceeded the relevant guideline criteria. DP recommended minor remedial works. DP revisited the site after remediation to collect validation samples. These samples required that the site had been adequately remediated and that no further work was required.
