Watawala, Sri LankaWatawala Landslip was a degrading earthslide threatening the main Columbo-Budulla Rail Line in Sri Lanka.
DP undertook the design and construction monitoring of remedial works to stabilise this 400m long, 3ha landslide which was originally to be stabilised with an elaborate system of rock anchors, beams and large diameter piles. DP designed an alternative system focusing on depressurising an underlying aquifer and draining the soil and slope. It comprised deep wells and eductors, surface drainage and deep inclined subsoil drains. The inclined drains were drilled from the base of the slope using recently developed directional drilling techniques. The DP design was submitted by John Holland Ltd who successfully completed the project with assistance from DP. A J Lucas Pty Ltd were the directional drilling subcontactor.
