Tonkin Highway Extension, Western Australia

Tonkin Highway, a major circulation access route south of Perth, WA, underwent a $140 million extension.  Douglas Partners Perth office was part of the design team for the project, in conjuction with Kellogg Brown & Root Pty Ltd and contractor John Holland Macmahon Joint Venutre.

DP contributions to the project included:

  • Geotechnical study, pavement design and advice during construction of a four lane, dual carriageway highway.
  • Assessment of the design groundwater level.
  • Foundation design (footings, piling and stone columns) for five bridges, including temporary foundation system for bridge launching operations.
  • Extensive air-coring investigation in order to assess the nature and quantity of material that can be recovered from the proposed excavation of a 1.7km long artificial lake, in order to use the recovered material as embankment for the highway.
