Albury-Wodonga Hume Freeway Project NSW-VIC

The Albury-Wodonga Hume Freeway Project is a 17.3km bypass linking the Hume Freeway at Wodonga in Victoria to the Hume Highway north of Albury in NSW.

At a cost of $524 million, the Albury-Wodonga Bypass is the largest ever road project to be completed in regional Australia and was jointly delivered by VicRoads and the RTA and funded by the Australian Government.

DP Geotechnical and Environmental Engineers from the Sydney office commenced initial investigations for the detailed design of the freeway in early 2005 for Abigroup Contractors who were awarded the construction contracts on both sides of the NSW/Victoria border. Work included detailed geotechnical design of foundation and reinforced soil walls and advice on earthworks, subgrade preparation, batter slope stability, rippability in deep cuts and soil remediation of former landfills.

The 17.5km dual carriageway includes over 30 new bridges, 7 major interchanges, and has eliminated 6 level crossings while bypassing 17 sets of traffic lights. Heavy vehicle traffic has been removed from the residential streets and new pedestrian access has been provided over Albury Railway Station.
