National Tennis Centre, Melbourne VICWorld class sport is an exacting business, notably tennis, where playing surface conditions and flatness of the playing surface need to be precise.
There is a lot of high technology that goes into the game of tennis. Partly to do with achieving predictable grip and ball bounce but also because of the electrical monitoring systems used to determine whether a ball is technically In or Out.
DP carried out a range of geotechnical assessments to determine subgrade conditions beneath selected courts at the National Tennis Centre, including Rod Laver Arena and the Show Courts. The courts were constructed over twenty years ago, the bases varying from concrete to cement treated crushed recycled concrete, ordinary crushed rock and asphalt.
DP engineers from Melbourne branch met with centre managers and operators in order to fully understand the technical requirements of the playing surfaces. The investigations were used as the basis to assist Tennis Australia development decisions and improvements to the courts of a major planned resurfacing operation to ensure that the playing surfaces were of 'world class'.
